Henry Hudson
Accidentally Henry Hudson discovered the New World for the Dutch. He was supposed to find an easier passage to Asia. Instead, he sailed with the Half Moon into the unknown waters of the West.
In September 1609, he arrived in New York Harbor. He sailed up to Albany.
He was impressed by the richness of this area: all those beavers, deer, otters and fish. And the Indian villages around which Natives grew corn and beans. His vision was: “This land is the finest for cultivation that I ever in my life set foot upon, and it also abounds in trees of any description.” He claimed the area for the Dutch.
The area became one of the best fur trade regions. Dutch merchandisers followed the path of Hudson. Doing trade was an overwhelming success.
