Good, and corporate governance
Whether being an old or a new world, the present time and the development towards a global market, requires of countries, organizations and citizens to act in accordance with good, and corporate governance, in order to serve political, economical and human rights. To bring society to the next level. To have a foundation for a future with a convenient truth.
Governance is about how people govern themselves.
In the 21st century, this means on a national level that there is democratic governance which denotes that for any government to be legitimate, its authority should derive from elections. Both America and The Netherlands aspire to this policy deployment. Yet a lot of work has to be done to realize this world-wide.
From an economical perspective good governance is determined by the rule of law, meaning the protection of property, and respecting contracts, by an efficient and independent judiciary, by control, transparency, and accountability, by maintaining peace and order, by freedom of the media, and of information, by fighting corruption, by efficient public services and by a functioning market economy.
The past years can be seen as a crisis of the state, especially the financial crisis with the accounting scandals, both in America and in The Netherlands, and the large scale rescue of the business banks by the federal government in the US.
These days, the Dutch have a corporate governance code: the Tabaksblat code. To avoid extreme pay-offs for board members, and short term attacks by shareholders. This is an invitation to work together with shareholders, stakeholders and others involved to gain profits for the short and long term. Morris Tabaksblat was CEO of the multinational Unilever.
Samuel J. Palmisano, CEO of IBM says: “For nearly a century, IBM has chosen to live in the intersection of bringing innovations to the world that make a lasting difference. To build trusted, long-term relationships with owners, employees, partners, neighbors and the world at large. This choice has enabled our company to prosper, to create value for our clients and owners, to provide rewarding careers for millions of people, and to be a progressive force in the societies in which we do our work.”
