Characteristics

The beaver is the symbol of the West Indian Company, the company at the origin of New York. The Dutch are like the beavers. They build dams in the water. And like the beavers they know how to modify landscapes and water streams.
The Dutch settlers started to cut old growth forest and creating agricultural land.
The centuries long history of the connection between the Dutch and the Americans shows us the interrelations between the resources of the land, the course of the history and the impact on water and land.
The first settlers are described as people who easily quarreled easily. These days, in The Netherlands people say that the Dutch have a short fuse.
Typically Dutch is also a preference for working cooperatively in discussing policies, all while enjoying lots of coffee and cookies.
The Dutch roots of the Americans, combined with a four hundred year relationship, may be the reason that the Americans and the Dutch have some characteristics which are alike, and others and other that show quite a difference.
You will find the inhabitants of both countries all over the world.
In making money and doing business, both like to be good or even the best.
It is in the Dutch character to tell others what is good and right. It is no coincidence that the The Peace Palace is located in The Hague, a city often called the seat of international law because it houses the International Court of Justice (which is the principal judicial body of the United Nations). The Hague is also the seat of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, another part of the UN.
The Americans like to be acknowledged and rewarded for their efforts and energy they contribute to achieve goals and results. Again, it is not for nothing that the UN Headquarters, the World Bank and the IMF are in the USA.
And than there is Santa Claus. This character was introduced in the USA by the Dutch settlers. The Dutch have been celebrating St. Nicolaas Day (Sinterklaas) since the thirteenth century. His name day, December 5th is a day of presents and sweets for the children. The American Santa Claus is connected to Christmas time. In present day The Netherlands, we are seeing that both Sinterklaas and Santa Claus are bringing presents. Sales are growing.
