Architecture
Architecture in the US is regionally diverse and has been shaped by many external forces, for instance the Dutch.
US Architecture can be said to be eclectic, something unsurprising in such multicultural society. The overriding theme of American Architecture is modernity. The skyscrapers of the 20th century are the ultimate symbol of this modernity.
Architecture shows identity and makes it possible to feel at home in life and work. Buildings that last through time have airs and harmony as characteristics.
The American architect Frank Lloyd Wright has been very influential in modern America as well as in The Netherlands.
Quite a few of the early Dutch settlers were farmers. Throughout America you’ll find the structures known as Dutch barns. In a new world they are the landmarks of history.
In 2009, Five Franklin Place in TriBeCa, New York, will open. It is the first skyscraper of Dutch design. The façade of the building gives it a special expressive magic. The round forms of the Guggenheim Museum inspired Ben van Berkel, the Dutch architect.
At this time, in the Hudson Valley, in Dutchess County, a special project is in progress. In the typical ‘Brook in Waterland’ village style, houses are being built in the sophisticated, hand-crafted Dutch way. A unique combination of classic style, perfect housing, and new materials.
The Dutch architects are also good at process management. That is why they were invited to play a large role in the development of JFK Airport.
If you were free to build your house or company building, what would you want to express through the style and shape?
What would you consider to be the specialty and the success of the Dutch in their architecture and process management?
