Amsterdam and New York
Amsterdam and New York. In the beginning NY was called New Amsterdam. Both cities are places for business and communication. A gate to a world where it is common practice to meet and talk, to eat and have fun, to interacts and to get business done. Both are centers for free spirit and creativity.
The flag of Amsterdam shows three Andreas crosses in a black banner. This banner could be stand for the water flowing through Amsterdam. The apostle Andreas died a martyr’s death on such a cross.
The flag of New York tells the story of the Dutch in the colors orange, white and blue. These colors are the same as those in the Dutch flag in the 17th century.
In the middle of the NY flag is the eagle the symbol of the state of New York. The Native American stands for the original population in America, the sailor, for the settlement in the area. The beaver is the symbol of the West Indian Company. It was the first company in New York. The wings commemorate the Dutch history. Corn and baskets indicate the industry, and 1625, the year many people consider the city’s birth day.
In 1915 this flag was chosen. Thousands of school children were singing:
“Once again a flag is flying,
O’er Manhattan, old and new,
And it tells the city’s story
In the Orange, White and Blue….”
